Apple Maps in iOS 11 Gets Indoor Mapping for Airports & Malls

By June 10, 2017 June 26th, 2019 No Comments

Apple is going to offer something big with its next iOS update. The iOS 11 update is going to have indoor mapping and location features for airports and malls. The company has been working on this feature for long. Both Google and Bing are already offering indoor maps. The announcement was made at the recent Worldwide Developers Conference. The tech giant displayed updated Apple Maps that also showed indoor location for airports and malls.

Indoor Location for Shopping Malls

The indoor location feature for malls will first reach a dozen major cities around the world, including London. There is no indication that indoor navigation will be included too. It will show the following features to its users:

  • Search and browse
  • Store information
  • Floor plans
  • Directories of stores

Among competitors, both Google and Bing have been offering similar information for some time.

London is also featured in the initial list of airports where indoor maps will be offered within iOS 11. It will be available for both Heathrow and Gatwick airports.

Do Not Disturb Feature

Apple has also introduced a new ‘Do Not Disturb While Driving’ feature in iOS 11. It blocks out all kinds of notifications when the user is driving. The auto-response message informs the caller that the user is driving. It does however provide access to urgent messages.

This new feature seems to be a way to prevent distracted driving. Apple will automatically detect when the user is driving and activate this mode. The device’s screen will black out and will not come ON until the vehicle comes to a halt.

The autoresponse feature is integrated into iMessage. Users can however set some contacts as important, allowing them to view their messages or calls. Passengers can also exit the mode, as they are not behind the wheel.

At the same time Apple has added better lane guidance and speed limit features to enable safer navigation.

Release of iOS 11

Apple unveiled its next version of iOS, v11 at its recent developer’s conference. The beta version is already available for download. Some of the other new features include:

  • Better Siri
  • Improved photo features
  • Transfer money to friends using Apple Pay
  • Single-handed keyboard
  • Customisable Control Centre
  • Better multitasking on iPad
