BBC & Twitter Enter into a Partnership for UK General Election

By May 31, 2017 June 26th, 2019 No Comments

As campaigns and events around the UK General Election are heating up, Twitter has announced that it has entered into a partnership with BBC for live streaming election specials. This means Twitter users will be able to see breaking news and live video from the election coverage by BBC. The deal has been finalised for 5 election specials on BBC, covering election debates, results and more.

Video Coverage

The live streamed events will be available to users on both Twitter’s web and mobile versions. They will also feature live tweets which will be covered by the following hashtags:

  • #bbcelection
  • #bbcdebate
  • #bbcqt

Twitter has also created a site dedicated to the service. Users from the UK and worldwide can access these election-related video streams from BBC on bbcelection.twitter.com.

You will also be able to access the streams from the Explore section in Twitter. The video streams may also be made visible in the timelines of users from the UK once the broadcasts begin.

Live Tweets & Commentary

Users will also be able to view real-time tweets along with the video streams. In addition, commentary from journalists and election experts will also be displayed. This is the first time the national broadcaster has entered into a partnership with Twitter. The goal seems to be to increase engagement levels with its audiences. It will also give people more opportunities to ask questions to their politicians.

This is, however, not the first time that Twitter has partnered with a media house. It did enter into a partnership with Bloomberg in the 2016 US Presidential Elections. Even though the BBC UK-Twitter partnership is not as elaborate, it does create new avenues for the use of social media’s power in the country.

Twitter’s Other Live Streaming Partnerships

Twitter has entered into several other live streaming partnerships, but most of them are in the US. This is the first time that the micro-blogging site has done the same with an entity in the UK. Some of its agreements in the United States are with:

  • NFL
  • BuzzFeed
  • PGA Tour
  • WNBA
  • MLB
  • Live Nation

Twitter users in the UK will be able to see the live steam for the following BBC programmes:

  • BBC Election Debate (31 May)
  • Question Time Leaders Specials (2 June and 4 June)
  • Newsbeat Youth Debate (6 June)
  • Election Night Results Special (8 June)

This is a new example in the UK where mainstream media is collaborating with a social media site. It is expected to come across more similar examples in the future.
