Will Yahoo be Renamed as Altaba?

There are some major changes taking place at Yahoo Inc. A part of Yahoo’s assets will be renamed. And in its latest filing the company has claimed that the new name is going to be Altaba. This is after Yahoo Inc. is taken over by Verizon for $4.8 billion.

Verizon will be acquiring a part of Yahoo’s business. Some of it includes finance, email, and sports. However, the remaining part that is known as RemainCo will stay out of the deal. This includes around 35% of Yahoo Japan and 15% of Alibaba. These remaining parts will not be able to use the ‘Yahoo’ name and will be renamed.

The new name Altaba is closely associated with “Alibaba”.

The Verizon deal is much smaller compared to what Microsoft offered Yahoo around 8 years ago. Microsoft had then offered almost 10 times this current offer.

Recently Yahoo revealed its future plans if the Verizon deal goes through. some of the notable changes include:

  • The new name for the company can be Altaba Inc.
  • Marissa Mayer will leave the board
  • David Filo, the co-founder will leave the board

It will in fact the RemainCo part of the company that will be changing its name to Altaba. Besides Alibaba and Yahoo Japan, this remaining part also has some patents known as Excalibur.

Yahoo had already revealed in one of its filings back in September last year that the remaining part of the company will be changing its name. So the parts which will not change their name include:

  • Yahoo Search
  • Email
  • Yahoo Finance
  • Sports
  • News
  • Other parts of Yahoo Media

On the other end Verizon has indicated that it is likely to retain the Yahoo brand. It is expected that Yahoo’s core products will continue to flourish under the new company.

So Yahoo search and advertising will not be affected by the change in name. Businesses and marketers will continue to focus on Yahoo Search and Yahoo Ads.

Altaba usually translates into “father of Ali” in Chinese. It is worth mentioning that Alibaba is a Chinese company. The name is indicated to have originated through combination of the words “alternative” and “Alibaba”.

So when the deal with Verizon goes through, Yahoo Search and Yahoo Ads will continue to remain the same. The search engine continues to maintain over 3% of search market share in the UK and around 12.7% in the US.
